1853[25C] Arrows and Rays MS65 PCGS.
1853<25C> Arrows and Rays MS65 PCGS. As with many Uncirculated Arrows and Rays Quarters, this piece has deeply toned surfaces with a combination of crimson-magenta, gray-golden, and lime-green colorations overall. Soft, frosted mint luster rolls around each side as the coin is slowly rotated beneath a light. Well struck, the surfaces are exceptionally clean with the only disturbances being a few small marks hidden by the color in the obverse field.
Even though silver and gold coins were not effectively circulating within the United States because the coins' intrinsic value was worth more than its face value, it was, nevertheless, a contentious issue and the subject of much debate in Congress when a weight reduction was proposed to facilitate circulation of silver coinage. The weight of the Quarter was only reduced from 6.68 grams to 6.22 grams, but it was thought that the general public needed to be alerted to this weight change. As a result, the Quarters and Halves struck in 1853 on reduced-weight planchets had arrowheads placed on each side of the date on the obverse, and a glory of rays around the eagle on the reverse. An enormous number of coins were produced: more than 15 million pieces from 119 obverse and 120 reverse dies. As a result, lower grade examples are relatively easy to locate. However, solid Gems such as this piece are now quite scarce. Population: 20 in 65, 6 finer (3/04).
From the JFS Collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
