1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS61 PCGS. K-18, R.2. The cartwheel luster is unbroken across both sides of this crisply struck pioneer gold twenty. The right obverse field and reverse center have minor marks, and a small obverse rim ding is noted at 4:30.
Two earlier U.S. Assay Office twenty dollar issues, K-9 and K-17, were struck in .884 fine gold, but this alloy was eventually rejected by the U.S. customs office, due to a change in the interpretation of Federal law. The customs office afterward only accepted .900 fine gold or silver coins for payment of duties. This forced a modification to the obverse hub, and explains the rarity of K-17. The fineness was repunched, with the traces of an 8 visible atop the first 0. Listed on page 356 of the 2008 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
