1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS63 NGC. K-18, Breen-7723, R.2. The privately minted issues of gold coinage in California--between 1850 and 1855--were accomplished during a period marked by Eastern insensitivity to the economic needs of Californians, who were often left with insufficient means to conduct daily commerce. The United States Assay Office of Gold was a temporary political compromise that attempted, with little success, to fill the void until an actual U.S. Branch Mint in San Francisco was finally approved. Outstanding luster and rich lime-gold coloration are attributes of this Select Mint State piece. The design elements are crisply struck throughout. A small number of minor scratches and abrasions limit the grade. Listed on page 356 of the 2008 Guide Book. Census: 21 in 63, 21 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
