1853<$20> Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS60 NGC. K-18, R.2. Assay Twenties became the workhorse gold coins in Gold Rush San Francisco. As such, they are seldom found in Uncirculated grades even though quite a few were produced. These are the most readily available of all territorial gold coins. They were struck in the year preceding the opening of the San Francisco Mint, and are, in fact, official issues of the United States Government. As such, these are legitimately collectible issues that should be considered part of the Federal Double Eagle series. Given the 90% gold content, the same as Federal Double Eagles, this is the most closely related Twenty Dollar issue. This piece is crisply defined throughout with above average definition on the eagle's claws and the arrows above the shield. The green-gold surfaces show very few abrasions and present a matte-like appearance. Listed on page 299 of the 2005 Guide Book.
