1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS62 NGC. K-18, R.2. This straw-gold example is crisply struck and exhibits impressive cartwheel luster, particularly on the reverse. Minor obverse marks are present, but fewer than expected for the grade. Regarding K-18, Kagin (1981) states, "2 1/2 million pieces were minted from 3/53 to 10/30/53, from some 30 different dies destroyed in the fire of 1906." These dies were hubbed, since there are positional differences on either the obverse or reverse. Individual dies do have their peculiar characteristics, however. The present piece lacks crossbars on the A's in AMERICA. An upper right serif on the M in AMERICA is missing, while the neighboring E has an upper left serif. The Kagin plate coin is the opposite, with serifs on the M and an absent serif on the E. A comprehensive study of these die varieties and their comparable rarity has yet to be performed. Census: 48 in 62, 40 finer (10/06).
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
