1853<$20> Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS62 NGC. K-18, R.2. Once laws were enacted that required the United States Assay Office coinage to conform to the Mint Act of 1837, new dies had to be created in accordance with the standard alloy for gold, and the 900 THOUS dies were placed in use. Apparently, older dies had the fineness repunched, as most known pieces have 900 punched over 880. This example has the first 0 clearly punched over a previous 8, with the upper loop of the 8 visible above the 0. The 900 fine pieces were coined from March 1 to October 30, 1853, with a total production of about 2.5 million pieces. This is undoubtedly the most common variety in the entire series of California private and territorial gold coinage. The United States Assay Office pieces are included in that broad category, even though they are neither private nor territorial issues. These coins should be considered part of the regular series of United States double eagles. This example is sharply detailed and fully brilliant with attractive yellow-gold surfaces. Both sides have frosty gold luster. Finely scattered abrasions are clearly visible, but they are of little significance. A splendid Mint State example that is sure to please.
