1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU58 NGC. K-18, R.2. As the precursor to the mint that opened in San Francisco in 1854, the Assay Office takes on significance to collectors as it was the official producer of gold coins on the West Coast. While Assay twenties are occasionally found in AU condition, seldom are they seen with problem-free surfaces. These coins were needed in the channels of commerce, especially in the San Francisco area, and the slightest usage would diminish the original mint luster and add unsightly abrasions. This particular piece shows a significant presence of mint luster and there are no singularly mentionable marks on either side. Additionally, the surfaces display rich reddish patina, most notably around the devices.
From The Frank J.
