<B>1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU58 NGC.</B></I> K-18, R.2. The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906 not only obliterated much of the city of San Francisco (with the ironic exception of the San Francisco Mint) and took about 3,000 lives and left upwards of a quarter of a million people homeless--but it also destroyed 30 different dies that the U.S. Assay Office used to strike about 2.5 million pieces of the twenty dollar gold. This piece is one of those that shows the 900 over 880. The surfaces show only light abrasions on each side typical of the grade, and the color is a lovely gold-orange. An appealing piece with no mentionable impairments and loads of eye appeal.<BR><I>From The Frank J.
