1853<$20> Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 884 Thous. XF45 NGC. K-17, R.6. One of the scarcer varieties from the United States Assay Office of Gold, these were coined over a short eight day period of February 23 through March 1, 1853 as noted in Don Kagin's Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States on page 273. This particular coin shows luster in the fields and is a bright yellow-gold throughout. The surfaces are attractive with very few nicks or scratches although we note what appears to be a minor rim bump above the TE of STATES and another above the CA of AMERICA. Fully struck by the dies and with strong definition on the eagle. The combined NGC and PCGS Population reports show 22 examples in this grade or finer, so we nudged the rarity down a notch from that published in Kagin's reference, and this change was likely brought about by the recovery of similar coins from the S. S. Central America shipwreck in the past fifteen years. A commanding specimen for the specialist.
