1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 884 Thous. AU53 PCGS. K-17, Low R.7. This coin was previously offered as lot 7708 in our August 1999 sale of the Eugene Peterson Collection, where it was described as: "Struck over eight days in 1853, the 884 Thous. is a very rare Territorial and one of only an estimated dozen or so believed to exist today. This is a pleasing example and surely one of the finest known. The green-gold surfaces show a slight accent of reddish patina and the obverse is quite free from abrasions. The reverse, however, shows a planchet flaw over SA in SAN with a comet-shaped scrape next to it, as well as a cut on the lower right portion of that side." Listed on page 292 of the 2003 Guide Book. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
