1853/2 $20 XF45 PCGS. Breen-7162. An unmistakable
1853/2 $20 XF45 PCGS. Breen-7162. An unmistakable example of this elusive overdate. Under light magnification an underdigit and the diagnostic die dot below the RTY of LIBERTY are visible. The Breen Encyclopedia shows a very clear photo of the underdigit on page 564. Breen discovered this variety in Jacksonville, Florida in January 1959, but it was not widely recognized until Ted Clark published an article entitled "Will the Real 1853/2 $20 Please Stand Up?" in the January 7, 1981 edition of Coin World. The present example displays nice definition on the design elements, though the centers of a couple of stars along the right border are soft. The surfaces are apricot-gold in color, and exhibit luster in portions of the recessed areas. A few light to moderate bagmarks are seen over each side, and an area of pinscratches is seen in the upper left obverse field. Lot:8942
