1853/2<$20> MS61 S.S. Central America PCGS. The importance of this offering should be immediately apparent to anyone remotely familiar with U.S. gold. We have only seen one other Mint State example of this overdate, an MS62 we offered in our 2004 FUN Signature Sale, the previously finest known was an AU58.
The 1853 overdate is the only overdate that is recognized in the entire Liberty Double Eagle series. It wasn't discovered until 1959 and only began to be widely recognized in the early 1980s. By then, of the coins that were still in existence, a great many had been ravaged by cleaning or were only available in VF-XF condition. This is one of three MS61 examples, and is bettered by the single MS63 (the finest known) at either service. As an interesting aside, there were three overdates in the S.S. Central America holdings, two of which were in relatively high grades. This is a well defined piece (save for stars 11, 12, and 13) whose satiny mint luster is interrupted only by the presence of numerous small abrasions scattered over each side. The only mark that stands out as particularly noteworthy is a horizontal abrasion above the TW of TWENTY on the reverse.
All genuine 1853 overdates have the same die characteristics, and it is important to always check that these are present, as repunched dates are also known, and these coins have on occasion been foisted upon the unknowing as genuine overdates. Genuine overdates show clear evidence of the underdigit. There is also a diagnostic die dot below the R of LIBERTY, visible with light magnification. Repunching over a much smaller 1 is also noted near the base of the first digit (only faintly seen on this piece). Also, the crossbar of the A in STATES is broken and shows to have been repaired by hand.
A rare and important opportunity for the specialist.
From The Edward O'Neill Collection of Liberty Double Eagles.
