1853/2 $20 AU55 PCGS. Opinions divide on whether this controversial issue is a true overdate or not. Garrett and Guth comment, "The variety that is collected as the 'overdate' shows the remnants of a numeral beneath the 3 of the date, which is most pronounced near the bottom. Lee Minshull reports that the true 1853, 3/2 variety can be positively identified by a small die bulge beneath the R of LIBERTY." On the other hand, Q. David Bowers' Guide Book of double eagles is much more dubious, even though contributors to the book showed divided opinions among themselves. Regardless, this piece shows the die bulge that Minshull points out beneath the R of LIBERTY, and what certainly could be traces of a 2 within the lower loop of the 3. The surfaces are richly toned orange-gold, with good luster and eye appeal. Population: 11 in 55, 18 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
