1853/2 $20 AU55 NGC.
1853/2 $20 AU55 NGC.<p>The 1853/2 is the only recognized overdate in the entire Liberty Head Double Eagle series. It was not discovered until the late 1950s and did not begin to receive much publicity until the 1980s. It remains underappreciated today although a number of coins have sold at auction for five-figure prices over the past two to three years. The 1853/2 is among the rarest Philadelphia Double Eagles in terms of overall rarity. In high grades, it is the second rarest Type One issue from this mint, trailing only the 1862. It is very rare in the higher AU grades and extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three pieces (all grading MS61) currently accounted for. The 1853/2 can actually be attributed as an overdate without ever looking at the date itself. All true overdates have a raised die dot below the R in LIBERTY and the left side of the crossbar of the A in STATES is broken. These diagnostics are not seen on any other 1853 Double Eagle varieties, including the repunched 3. Good portions of original pinkish tinged mint luster remain around the more protected areas of the devices, especially on the reverse. Numerous small abrasions are scattered over each side with the most prominent marks located in the left obverse field out from stars 4-6, below star 1, and above the left (facing) wing of the eagle. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
