<B>1853/2 $20 AU58 NGC.</B></I> FS-301, formerly FS-008. The remnants of a 2 are visible inside the lower curve of the 3 in the date, and a diagnostic lump (probably a rust spot on the die) is located beneath the R of LIBERTY. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) note that the variety was discovered in the 1950s, and that examples were found on the <I>S.S. Central America</B></I> and <I>S.S. Republic,</B></I> some of which were in high grade. Mint State pieces are hard to come by, as evidenced by fewer than 10 specimens having been certified by NGC and PCGS.<BR> The AU58 example that we offer in this lot retains ample luster on the peach-gold surfaces that are tinted with light tan. Excellent motif definition has been imparted by a well executed strike.
