1853<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. Sharply struck and fully lustrous with exceptional frosty surfaces. Highly appealing. In the early 1850s, the Philadelphia Mint produced substantial quantities of gold coinage (such as 1,404,668 quarter eagles in 1853). This increased production was a direct result of the massive California gold discoveries. In the later 1850s and beyond, production was again smaller as the new San Francisco Mint increased production.
