1853<10C> Arrows MS67 PCGS. Fortin-101, Unhubbed date and arrows. Gold was discovered in California in 1848, and a steady flow of bullion soon followed from West coast mines. The U.S. was on a bimetallic gold and silver standard at the time, and the rise in the supply of gold meant that silver was now valued more highly than before. Silver coins vanished from circulation, and many were melted by speculators. This troublesome situation was resolved in 1853 by reducing the weight of the half dime through half dollar. Arrows were added to indicate the change in tenor, and these persisted through 1855. This well struck and flashy Superb Gem is lightly toned and displays prominent clashmarks. A tiny spot northeast of the shield is the sole imperfection. The left arrow is repunched south. From proof dies, although satin luster and slight left side softness on the dentils suggests a commercial striking. Census: 7 in 67, 5 finer (6/06).
