1853 10C Arrows MS67 PCGS. Although there is repunching along the top of the left arrow, this coin does not appear to be an example of the Greer-102 variety. Nevertheless, it is a truly exquisite representative of this popular, short-lived, three-year type. Scintillating frosty luster blankets the essentially untoned surfaces. Modest hints of brightness are seen in the fields, but we cannot locate a single distracting blemish. Fully struck with eye appeal to spare. Population: 13 in 67, with a mere three finer (7/02). The Mint Act of February 21, 1853 reduced the weight of the Seated Dime from 2.67 grams to 2.49 grams to discourage hoarding. The Philadelphia Mint delivered a staggering (for the era) total of 12 million 1853-dated Dimes at the new weight standard, each with arrows flanking the date to denote the change. Most of these coins entered circulation, where they replaced their heavier predecessors that had been withdrawn and melted. Although common in worn grades, the 1853 Arrows is scarce at the finer Mint State levels of preservation, particularly when compared to the number of high grade type collectors in today's hobby.
