This led to hoarding and mass melting of these coins. Something had to be done, and the solution was simple. Just lower the weight of these coins and bring them back in line. Thus, in February 1853, legislation was passed by Congress doing just that. The new lower weight coinage was introduced, and small arrowheads were added to the obverse design, on both sides of the date. This was the signal that a given coin was struck at the new standard. This sensational Gem has brilliant and frosty silver luster without any evidence of toning. The design elements are bold, and the eye appeal is extraordinary.
