1853 $10 MS64 PCGS. Among gold type coins, the No Mott
1853 $10 MS64 PCGS. Among gold type coins, the No Motto half eagles and eagles rank high in desirability, regardless of date, and this is especially true in Choice or Gem Mint State condition. The 1853 is considered one of the more common dates in this series of rarities, yet only 26 Mint State examples have been certified by PCGS, and none finer than this coin. We have only sold an MS64 example of this date on one previous occasion, more than a decade ago in October 1995, and the next best piece offered by us grades just MS62. This piece is a different example than the 1995 offering, exhibiting sharp central details with exceptional surfaces for the grade. The stars on the obverse and the wing tips just inside the reverse border are a bit weakly defined, but all other details are fully brought up. Both sides have frosty luster with brilliant yellow-gold color, accented by hints of pink and orange toning. A small nick between the top arrow and the base of the right (facing) wing it the only mark large enough to help track the pedigree of this near-Gem. A faint hairline in the upper reverse field is barely visible. Die characteristics are few, but the upper left border of the shield is clearly doubled, with the horizontal shield lines extending past the inner border and a couple of these extending past the outer border as well. Population: 3 in 64, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
