1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 900 Thous. MS61 NGC. K-16, Low R.6. The United States Assay Office of Gold under Curtis, Perry, and Ward issued Ten Dollar gold coins in 1853 at .900 fineness in response to an appeal from local California merchants. The earlier Assay Office coins of lower fineness were condemned by Congress and made unacceptable for custom duties because they did not conform to the Mint Act of January 18,1837. That act stated that all U.S. gold coins had to be of .900 fineness with no more than 50 parts silver per thousand, and the remainder copper. All examples of the 1853 Kagin-16 Assay Office Ten were produced between March and April of that year. The present survivor is one of only eight Mint State examples certified by NGC and PCGS (10/02). The otherwise green-gold surfaces are tinged in orange-gold accents. The strike is razor sharp in all areas and the features, while not particularly vibrant, are remarkably abrasion-free for the issue as well as the grade. A faint reverse scrape through and below the E in OFFICE is mentioned solely for pedigree purposes, as it is only readily evident with a loupe.
