1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 900 Thous. MS60 PCGS. K-16, Low R.6. The Mint Act of Jan. 18, 1837, stated that all U.S. gold coins had to be of .900 fineness, with no more than 50 parts silver per thousand, and the remainder copper. Congress condemned earlier U.S. Assay Office pieces of lesser fineness as unfit for custom duties. Although considered and collected as a Territorial gold issue, the U.S. Assay Office of Gold pieces, struck in March-April 1853, are actually issued under the authority of the U.S. government, an expedient until the San Francisco Mint could be opened in 1854. This piece offers brilliant, full luster over greenish-gold surfaces, with moderate abrasions and a couple of pinscrapes on the obverse.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
