1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 900 Thous. MS60 NGC. K-16, Low R.6. The later U.S. Assay Office pieces with 900 THOUS rather than 884 THOUS were an effort by the producers to avoid trouble with Federal authorities over coins that were less than the minimum required fineness specified by the 1837 Mint Act governing gold coinage. The pieces were all struck between March and April 1853. This piece shows fully lustrous surfaces on each side, with greenish-gold color (as Kagin notes for the variety). There are many minuscule abrasions noted under a loupe, but no major ones and none that are individually significant. Census: 2 in 60, 4 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
