1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 900 Thous. AU50 PCGS. Ex: Central America. K-16, Low R.6. Struck between March and April of 1853, the Ten and Twenty Dollar gold coins from the Assay Office served in a quasi-official capacity for actual coinage until the mint opened in 1854. This piece was loaded in the hold of the S.S. Central America in 1857 and was headed around The Horn for the East Coast until a storm hit a couple of hundred miles off the Carolina coast. Hundreds of lives were lost and an untold amount of gold went to the bottom of the ocean. So much gold was lost, in fact, that the loss of this one ship was a contributing factor to the Panic of 1857. This piece saw limited use in the channels of commerce before 1857 as most of the original mint luster remains. The green-gold surfaces show a number of small abrasions, but none are really large or distracting. Listed on page 291 of the 2003 Guide Book.
