1853 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar, 884 Thous. AU53 PCGS. K-15, R.7. Walter Breen classified the issues of Augustus Humbert and the U.S. Assay Office as issues of "The United States Branch Mint at San Francisco" and gave them a separate chapter in his Complete Encyclopedia. Nearly the entire production of this entity was in the form of $50 slugs, or "ingots" as they were called at the time. A considerable number of $20 gold pieces were coined, and few $10 pieces were minted. Quantifying the rarity ratings of Donald Kagin, for all of the various issues combined, approximately 500 $50 pieces survive, 800 $20 pieces, and just 200 $10 pieces, including less than a dozen of this particular variety. This example is a delightful representative with light yellow-gold color that exhibits hints of green, and retaining traces of reflective fields. Like nearly all California gold pieces, the surfaces are lightly marked, but are exceptional overall on this representative. Listed on page 355 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 53, 2 finer (7/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
