<B>1853 $1 Liberty Octagonal 1 Dollar, BG-531, R.4, MS63 PCGS.</B></I> A popular Period One octagonal dollar variety with a well-engraved portrait of Liberty. A prooflike piece with noticeable contrast between the bust and the obverse field. BG-531 was one variety that undoubtedly circulated briefly within the Gold Rush economy. Per the Breen-Gillio reference, two pieces were recovered from the <I>S.S. Winfield Scott,</B></I> which sank December 1, 1853.
