1852 One of the first small California gold coins issued, perhaps the very coin shown to the editor of the New Orleans Daily Picayune June 29, 1852 (see Lot 205); Walter Breen thought it to be a BG-427. Small Liberty head like those used on the ¼ dollars issued by Antoine Louis Nouizillet (thus attributed to him though unmarked), 13 tiny pearls on coronet, 13 stars; wreath, HALF DOL. CALIFORNIA GOLD. around, 1852 within. Rare. Looks to be bright golden brilliant uncirculated; reddish toning in fields. PCGS AU58. Only 8 coins graded in mint state, with duplication.
