Struck in 1851 and again in 1852, the Assay Office pieces were overseen by mintmaster Augustus Humbert under contract from the state of California to provide these emergency issues until a time when the federal mint could take over coinage. The present example has nice corners (not knocked about as on many), some luster present, and the usual mix of nicks and scratches because it is so large and heavy (2-1/2 ounces approximately).
