1852 Seated Half Dollar NGC MS65
Half Dollars 1852 NGC graded Mint State 65. <b>Only two coins certified in Mint State 65. A stunning coin, brilliant and white, with gem quality surface and a bold strike including most stars around Liberty. Some parallel lines on either side of the seated figure appear to be die striation lines created at the time the mint technician was polishing the obverse die. The reverse has a blast of snowy white frost. (NGC holder 1633242-002) Issues remained fairly large until 1850 in the seated Liberty half dollar series. The Mint's principal output in this period continued to consist of cents, half dollars, and half eagles, as explained in the Breen encyclopedia. However, discovery of gold in California sent world market prices down in terms of silver, "which trend was experienced in the East as a sharp rise in silver bullion prices reckoned in gold dollars. Eventually (1851-53) bullion dealers bought up most of the Mint's output of larger silver coins for shipment to the West Indies and Latin America, partly as coins, largely as ingots made by melting the coins: They had become worth more than face value as bulk silver. Less silver went to the mints for coinage; survivors remain very scarce, especially near mint state." And the rest, as they say, is history!
