1852 S$1 Restrike PR65 PCGS. A stunning Gem examp
1852<S$1> Restrike PR65 PCGS. A stunning Gem example of this rare issue which boasts splendid lilac and gold toning on both the obverse and reverse. The surfaces are outstanding and show carefully preserved mirror fields and boldly struck devices. Rarely are these early proofs found in such superlative condition, and only when the most advanced collections are offered are coins of this caliber available.
Collectors soon discovered that as a date, the 1852 Seated dollar was all but impossible to locate. Bullion dealers and speculators had gathered up as many of these early 1850s silver dollars as could be found and melted them with the increased value of silver caused by the California Gold Rush. By 1858 collectors were pestering the Philadelphia Mint for examples of 1851 and 1852 dollars, and helped bring about the restrikes of those dates. As became a common practice during the 1860s, a few more were coined to satisfy the demand, and these Restrikes were from different dies than the originals. In particular we note a minute lint mark extending below the point of the eighth star and a tiny nick near the point of the lowest olive leaf on the reverse which will help to identify this coin in the future. A foremost and important opportunity for the specialist to acquire one of the key dates to this series. Population: 3 in 65, 0 finer (6/05).
