1852$1> Original--Cleaned--ANACS. AU58 Details. In 1852, 1,100 original business strike silver dollars were produced. An unknown number of restrikes (in proof format) were coined at a later date. Various die characteristics help to distinguish the difference between originals and restrikes. On the original, a small area of the die under Liberty's chin is unfinished, giving rise to what is sometimes described as a "bearded Liberty." On the reverse shield, numerous short die lines are visible within the open vertical spaces (though later strikings show none of these). Moreover, David Bowers (1995) writes that: "The typical original shows numerous vertical shield stripe elements extending above and into the horizontal stripes, and below and through the outside of the shield border; this is very distinctive."
The specimen in this lot displays all of the above diagnostics. The bright surfaces are finely hairlined from a light polishing, and exhibit just an occasional hint of light tan color. The design features are sharply defined, except for weakness in the centers of the stars along the right obverse border. Each side reveals a few minute contact marks, none of which is worthy of individual mention.
From The Steve Glenn Collection, Part Two.
