1852 S$1 Original AU58 PCGS. The differences betwe 1852[S$1] Original AU58 PCGS.
1852<S$1> Original AU58 PCGS. The differences between 1852 Original and Restrike Silver Dollars are subtle at best. We can be relatively certain that business strike examples such as this are all Original strikings and that the Restrikes are all Proofs. On the reverse, several horizontal and diagonal lines are visible within the open vertical spaces of the shield, and several individual vertical lines in the shield extend up through several horizontal shield lines. There is apparently just this single die variety of business strike 1852 Silver Dollars, and yet there appear to be several varieties of Proofs. Dave Bowers recorded six descriptions of reverse dies for the Proof varieties, some restrikes and others that my be original to the year of issue. A further note suggests that some may represent duplicate listings, and that it is highly unlikely that six different reverse dies were actually used.
The 1852 Silver Dollar was recognized as a rarity almost immediately after it was struck. By 1870, not even 20 years after they were coined, there were auction records at $40 or more. Of course, today prices easily reach five figures, even for circulated examples.
This exceptional AU example has nearly full satiny luster with sharp design elements on both sides. The surfaces have lovely intermingled gold and iridescent toning. Although a few typical handling marks are noted, there are no distractions of any sort. This is a wonderful example and seldom available. Only 1,100 were originally struck, and probably less than 100 examples remain today.
