1852 S$1 MS62 PCGS. During the year, the Philadelphia
1852 S$1 MS62 PCGS. During the year, the Philadelphia Mint coined just 1,100 circulation strike dollars along with a small additional quantity of proofs, perhaps numbering 15 to 30 coins. An additional number of proofs were restruck in later years, perhaps numbering nearly 100 additional coins. It is believed that all circulation strike coins were originals actually issued in 1852, and such pieces are deemed the most important by knowledgeable collectors and numismatists. Most surviving circulation strike coins are seen in grades of XF and AU, although occasionally lower or higher grade pieces appear in the marketplace. This example is one of those higher grade Mint State pieces, and it is highly desirable at this grade. The surfaces are satiny and mildly prooflike, with somewhat reflective devices. Pale champagne color covers both sides with splashes of deeper lilac toning.
Certain important die characteristics can be seen on the piece, distinguishing it from proofs, either original or restrikes. The obverse fields have faint die striae or polishing lines parallel to Liberty's left shin. Liberty has a "beard" with the space between her chin and shoulder unfinished. Fine diagonal file lines are close to the obverse dentils at about 5 o'clock. The lowest crossbar on the reverse extends left of the shield border. At the bottom of the shield, several vertical elements extend well beyond the shield border. In fact, every one of the 18 individual vertical lines in the six shield stripes extend beyond the lower shield border to one degree or another. Similarly, nearly every vertical line extends into the horizontal crossbars, with the first line of stripe 3 extending upward through at least six crossbars.
All of these various characteristics identify this piece as an 1852 "Original" silver dollar, in our opinion, and a coin that will receive great attention when it crosses the auction block. Population: 5 in 62, 6 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
