1852 S$1 AU58 NGC. A mere 1,100 original business
1852<S$1> AU58 NGC. A mere 1,100 original business strike Silver Dollars were produced this year, along with an unknown number of restrikes (in proof format) coined at a later date. This example is one of the original coins produced in 1852, as evidenced by various die characteristics that include an unfinished area under Liberty's chin and numerous short die lines visible within the open vertical spaces of the reverse shield. It is doubtful that more than 40-60 pieces survive in all grades. This untoned example is well defined save for characteristic softness on Liberty's head and surrounding stars. Although subdued by a modest amount of scuffiness, the fields display subtle prooflike qualities throughout. A lengthy reeding mark above the eagle's right (facing) wing is the most obvious distraction. An important No Motto issue for the specialist in Seated Liberty Dollars. Population: 5 in 58, 8 finer (6/05).
