1852-O H10C MS65 PCGS. This example is near the top of the certified survivors of this issue, with only one example graded finer at each service (1/06). The 1852-O saw a modest mintage of 260,000 pieces, during a period in which rising silver prices meant that most examples were immediately melted. Only a year later, under the auspices of the Act of February 21, 1853, the weight of a half dime was reduced from 1.35 grams of 900 fine silver to 1.24 grams of 900 fine silver, with arrows at the date signifying the reduction.
This lovely example has pale gold patina that coats the lustrous devices and fields, with slightly darker devices contrasting to provide a somewhat cameo effect. An interesting die crack traverses from star 1 up Liberty's left (facing) arm past the elbow. The strike is well executed, save for Liberty's head and the reverse bowknot opposite, and the right-side stars. Scrutiny reveals no marks or abrasions of significant size.
