1852-O<25C> MS62 ANACS. The 1852-O is a fabulously rare coin in Mint State. Larry Briggs' The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Seated Liberty Quarters lists this issue as a High R.7 in Uncirculated. NGC and PCGS have graded a total of three specimens of the issue in Mint State, namely an MS63 at PCGS and one each in MS61 and MS62 at NGC (4/06). This issue is interesting not only from a rarity perspective, but also from a historical point of view: it is the only Seated Liberty quarter that was struck with a rounded or beveled rim that failed to protect the interior of the coin from early (and often advanced) wear.
The present specimen offers deep, even plum-gray toning over both sides, with a decent strike for this issue that Briggs' tome says is always poorly struck. The localized strike weakness is confined largely to the right-side stars and Liberty's head and neck on the obverse, and to the eagle's claws and fletchings on the reverse. The Seated Liberty quarter specialists need to act decisively here: this is only the second time that we have offered a problem-free Mint State specimen of this issue.
