1852-O<$20> MS62 PCGS. The 1852-O (190,000 pieces produced) is the second-most common of the 1850-1852 double eagles from the New Orleans Mint. Of course, this is in terms of total number of coins known, as Winter and Crum (2002) estimate that only 12-18 Mint State examples are extant. Survivors of this issue generally display a softer overall impression than those of the 1850-O delivery, but this sharper-than-average coin only has a hint of weakness on the obverse, over the lowest hair curls and the date. The features are bold overall, and the color is a pleasing blend of lime-green and orange-gold shades. Modest brightness is seen in the fields at certain angles, evidence of a semi-prooflike finish. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention a horizontal abrasion in the left obverse field between star 2 and Liberty's chin, but the remaining distractions are small and not individually conspicuous. There is a swirl of reddish-tan patina in the right reverse field. A significant condition rarity, and a coin that should receive the respect and attention of serious specialists.
