1852-O $20 MS60 NGC. Despite its status as a common (relative to most other Liberty Double Eagles from the New Orleans Mint) issue, the 1852-O (190,000 pieces produced) is a noteworthy rarity in Mint State. Writing in 1992, Doug Winter (New Orleans Mint Gold Coins: 1838-1909) states that 10-12 Uncirculated examples are extant. This estimate is a little on the low side for today's hobby, with the combined NGC and PCGS population of 30 pieces that grade MS60-MS65 (10/02) closer to the truth. Regardless, there is no doubt that the present BU representative is among the finest certified survivors of this early Double Eagle condition rarity. The striking detail, while not 100% full, is well above average for this often noticeably blunt issue. There are a few scattered abrasions, as befits the grade, but rich green-gold color and an appreciable prooflike finish dominate the outward appearance. We recently handled two MS60 NGC 1852-O Double Eagles, both of which are distinct from the present specimen: 1. Ex: FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/2001), lot 8347, where it realized $9,488. 2. Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 5-6/2001), lot 9178, where it realized $9,200.From the Ashland City Collection.
