1852-O $20 AU55 NGC. Like the preceding 1851-O issue,
1852-O<$20> AU55 NGC. Like the preceding 1851-O issue, this date is relatively easy to locate in most circulated grades up to the lower numerical levels of the AU grade, but Choice AU or finer examples are difficult to find, especially with any eye appeal. Bowers noted: "Most known 1852-Os are VF to EF, a familiar mantra for all double eagles of this decade except for some notable hoard coins (mainly from the San Francisco Mint)."
Despite comments to the contrary by Winter and Crum, this particular example is from a different reverse die than the 1851-O specimen. These authors stated: "The reverse die used to strike the 1852-O is the same found on 1851-O double eagles." As there were nine reverse dies sent to New Orleans in 1851, and four more in 1852, it seems more likely that the reverse dies used in 1852 were different than those used in 1851. A comparison of these two New Orleans Mint coins in The Wyoming Collection show many similarities, but the 1851-O example has die cracks through the tops of quite a few letters, especially UNITED and ST, while no similar die cracks appear on this 1852-O.
This example is a highly appealing representative with rich honey-gold color and greenish tendencies. Both sides have satiny luster with hints of a prooflike surface. Aside from minor chatter marks near the final digit of the date, the surfaces are remarkably unabraded. Examples such as this piece, with clean surfaces and excellent eye appeal, usually bring a premium over the usual market levels. The collector is advised to formulate a bid accordingly.
From The Wyoming Collection.
