<B>1852-O $20 AU53 PCGS.</B></I> With a mintage of 190,000, which is relatively high for O-mint twenty dollar gold pieces, the 1852-O is easily obtainable in circulated grades, especially with impairments. However, finding an attractive example in AU or higher condition presents a challenge. Not a challenge financially speaking, as this issue remains highly undervalued. The challenge is more about patience, as problem-free AU specimens are demonstrably scarce. In his <I>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint,</B></I> Douglas Winter states of the 1852-O double eagle: "It becomes scarce in AU55, rare in AU58 and it is very rare in uncirculated." The PCGS <I>Population Report</B></I> tells a similar story; 43 coins graded AU53, with 70 finer, including only 12 in Mint State. The finest graded is an MS62 (4/07).
