1852-O $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Collectors who place considerable stock in the affect that original mintage figures have on the availability of coins in today's market might be tempted to describe the 1852-O (140,000 pieces produced) as one of the more common Liberty Quarter Eagles from the New Orleans Mint. After all, only the 1843-O Small Date, 1851-O, and 1854-O boast higher mintages. In this particularly case, however, those who are familiar with the economic climate of the United States in 1852 and its affect on the silver coinage of this date are in a much better position to pass judgment on the relative and absolute rarity of the '52-O Quarter Eagle. The vast majority of the coins produced seem to have been melted or otherwise lost and Winter (1992) opines that only 95-105 pieces are extant in all grades. Mint State survivors are of the utmost rarity with only 25 examples (resubmissions?) known to NGC and PCGS (1/03). A solid Condition Census representative, both sides display pleasing green-gold color that backlights more vivid orange-gold overtones. The obverse is bold-to-sharp over all features while the reverse is typically soft over the eagle's neck and left (facing) leg feathers. There is not an excessive number of abrasions for a gold coin at the MS62 level, those that are present being mostly small in size. The only other 1852-O of similar quality that we have offered in recent months is the MS63 NGC example that sold as lot 4698 in our January 2003 sale of the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
