1852 N-24 R8- Proof-Only
1852 N-24 R8- Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 64 Brown. The obverse is reddish medium brown and chocolate with overtones of iridescent rose and violet. The reverse is darker chocolate and olive brown with some lighter shades inside the wreath. Possibly chemically cleaned long ago but the toning is deep and attractive and the overall eye appeal of this piece is excellent. The fields are highly reflective with deep mirrors but there are some faint hairlines, especially on the obverse. There is a small spot of carbon or other crud in the dentils over star 8 and a microscopic dimple in the planchet over the left foot of the 1 (as struck). One of only 3 known making it the rarest of the proof-only late date cent varieties. Called Proof-63 by Loring and tied for CC#2 in his census of proof large cents. Our grade is Proof-60, CC#3 of the 3 examples in the Grellman census. Comes with an outstanding provenance, as you would expect for such an important coin. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only Brown Proof graded at PCGS for the variety. DWH #1869 (PCGS # 147290) .
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
