1852 Moffat & Co. $10 Wide Date Ten Dollar AU53 N
1852 Moffat & Co.<$10> Wide Date Ten Dollar AU53 NGC K-9, R.6. This is the Wide Date variety although it is incorrectly identified as "Close Date" by NGC. Both varieties appear to be approximately equal in rarity. The reverse is inscribed with 264 GRS and 880 THOUS, suggesting a net gold content of 0.484 ounces, almost identical to that of Federal Ten Dollar gold pieces. The firm of Moffat & Co. was one of the earliest issuers of California gold coinage. Their first issues were the "specie ingots" issued in June and July 1849. Only one other firm, Norris Gregg and Norris, was producing gold coinage at the time. This is a pleasing example with light greenish-gold coloration and rich orange toning. Although somewhat weakly defined, the surfaces are attractive with considerable underlying luster.
