Austrian. Marked 852 on right lock plate. Applewood stock. Smuggled into Texas through Mexico for confederate army. Previously from the Jake Johnson Collection. Mr. Johnson was a historian as well as collector. His comprehensive understanding of the Civil War in the West gave him the early advantage in collecting a number of muskets that were used by combatants in the major battles of Valverde and Glorieta Pass battles in New Mexico. He knew that Texans had purchased the Lorenz muskets from Austria at the beginning of the Civil War. He felt that the Lorenz muskets he found in the Pueblos and Hispanic Villages could be pegged to the Texas Confederacy and their temporary occupation of New Mexico.
