1852<G$1> MS67 PCGS. This Superb Gem coin approaches perfection, both from technical and aesthetic standpoints. It is difficult to say which is superior, the surfaces or the strike. The color alternates from a predominant honey-gold on the obverse to areas of greenish-gold and copper-gold on both sides. The frosty luster is full and unbroken, even as it passes through toned areas of varying intensity. The strike on both sides is so superb that it brings out details seldom seen: not only are the star centrils all full as expected, but also each individual point atop Liberty's coronet is prominent. Each lock of hair is full and sculpted--to the point that individual hair strands are quite apparent--and shows absolutely no weakness anywhere. The small reverse wreath shows all detail that was impressed into the die. No central weakness is seen, either on the date or denomination. There are old, light signs of die clashing on the reverse, and on the obverse a small die crack runs from star 1, just above the bust truncation, to the rim nearby. A minute dark spot between star 5 and the coronet is barely noticeable, even under a high-powered loupe. This coin is nearly unimprovable, since PCGS has graded only four examples higher, with one finer at NGC (1/06).
