1852-D G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 4-F. A scarce coin in all grades, per Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint 1838-1861, (1997) in which he notes that this issue is usually seen in XF40 to AU55 grades, becoming "quite rare in the highest circulated grades and very rare in any Mint State grade." This attractive piece shows just a trace of rub, largely confined to Liberty's highpoint hair. The characteristic die clash marks before Liberty's face are present, as well as the always-present "broken nose" on Liberty and die cracks through the first and below the last A in AMERICA (the former always present, the latter only sometimes). Perusal with a loupe reveals only a few light scrapes and even lighter planchet roughness, but no major distractions. Ample luster complements the medium-gold surfaces, with a pleasing strike completing the ensemble. Census: 30 in 58, 32 finer (12/06).
From The Frank J. McCarthy Jr. Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
