1852-D $5 MS63 PCGS.
1852-D $5 MS63 PCGS. Variety 28-U. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The date is placed to the right and the 1 is free of the truncation of Liberty's neck. There is a heavy vertical line that extends through the right side of the second S in STATES. This is the scarcest of the three varieties known.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1852-D is among the more common Dahlonega half eagles. However, it is a much scarcer coin in high grades than such issues as the 1853-D and the 1854-D. Of the 200-250+ pieces that exist today, only seven or eight Uncirculated coins are known. The finest is probably the coin in the Duke's Creek Collection and is graded MS63 by PCGS. We are aware of just one other PCGS MS63 (the piece we are offering here) as well as an NGC MS63 (Ex: Ashland City Collection) and small group of properly graded MS62s.STRIKE: The Dahlonega half eagles struck from 1852 to 1856 have a much different appearance than those struck in the preceding years. Most are very weakly defined at the borders and possess a distinctive beveled edge. The Green Pond coin is actually quite well struck for the date. The obverse has some weakness on the hair below BERT in LIBERTY and on the curl below the ear. The stars are mostly sharp and the border is quite bold except from 1 to 3 o'clock. The reverse is weak on the eagle's neck and on the right (facing) talon. The denticles are weak from 10 to 12 o'clock but are sharp elsewhere. There is no beveling noted on the rims as sometime seen.SURFACES: There is a small scratch that runs diagonally from the ball of the 5 into a denticle below the middle of the 2 and a tiny nick below the nostril. On the reverse, another shallow scratch is noted between the eagle's left (facing) claw and the stop to the left of FIVE. Otherwise, the surfaces are very clean with just a few light marks. This is unusual for the date as most 1852-D half eagles are very heavily abraded. Some light, easily removable haziness can be seen on the obverse and reverse.LUSTER: This is a very frosty coin with much above average luster. Unlike most of the higher grade 1852-D half eagles, it does not have a grainy texture.COLORATION: The obverse displays a medium-deep, orange-gold hue with some splashes of rose and pale green-gold. The reverse is a more even medium orange-gold and light green shade.EYE APPEAL: The 1852-D half eagle is a coin that is very hard to find with good eye appeal. The present example is certainly among the finest known, both from a technical and aesthetic standpoint. It is well struck and lustrous with interesting color.COMPARABLES: In our January 2003 Ashland City Collection we sold an NGC MS63 as lot 4780 for $19,550. In the 1999 ANA Sale, we sold the Chestatee PCGS MS62 example as lot 7690 for $10,063.PEDIGREE: Purchased via Doug Winter from our January 1999 North Georgia Collection (lot 7703), where it brought $23,000; earlier Ex: Doug Winter; David Carr (Delaware Valley Rare Coins). This is the plate coin in both the first and the second editions of Doug Winter's book(s) on Dahlonega gold and it listed in the current Condition Census as being tied with one other coin for honors as the finest known 1852-D half eagle.
