Variety 28-U (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system), the scarcest of the three varieties known for this issue. Among Dahlonega Half Eagles, the 1852-D has the second largest mintage with 91,584 pieces struck. As a result, examples are readily available up to and including the AU 50 level. Choice About Uncirculated specimens are, however, quite scarce and the present Mint State representative qualifies as upper-end Condition Census or possibly finest known, with this the sole example graded MS63 at NGC, along with only two others at PCGS, and none finer at either service to date (1/04).. The striking details are a bit softly defined, as usually found on examples of this issue. However, the surfaces have rich orange-gold coloration with a slight accent of lilac over the figure of Liberty. Lightly abraded overall, with an insubstantial pinscratch running horizontally through the left obverse field and Liberty's cheek, and with two small planchet flakes in the field by star 12.<BR><I>Ex: Ashland City Collection (Heritage, 1/03), lot 4780, where it realized $19,550; Chestatee Collection/1999 ANA (Heritage, 8/99), lot 7690, where it realized $10,063.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/11/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$19,550.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
