1852-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 28-U and the scarcest 1852-D[$5] AU55 NGC.
1852-D<$5> AU55 NGC. Variety 28-U and the scarcest of three die varieties known. Discovery of this variety apparently goes to Bowers and Merena in the May 2000 Harry Bass sale. A few more have been identified since that time. Unfortunately, however, the coin was not illustrated in the Bass catalog where it appeared as lot 439. Digits 1 and 2 on the obverse are both very close to the bust truncation, with the peak of the 1 well right of the leading edge of the bust. The reverse has the upper left serif touching the tip of the lowest arrow feather. Right edge of the upright of the mintmark is directly over the junction of V and E in FIVE. A heavy, nearly vertical die line extends from the border through the right side of the final S in STATES, and it is this feature that easily identifies this reverse. This is a splendid example with a few scattered surface marks as usually seen on the Southern gold coinage. Slight weakness of strike is noted on certain elements of the devices, particularly the arrow feathers and claws of the eagle. A few splashes of orange toning add to the overall visual impact.
