1852-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Variety 15-M. This exceptional 1852-D Quarter Eagle appears to be tied for finest known, according to the most current information available to us. The finest coin listed in Doug Winter's most recent book on Dahlonega gold is a PCGS MS63 in the Duke's Creek Collection while the second best is a PCGS MS62 (Ex: James Stack) in a Kansas collection. The Green Pond Collection coin (from last year's FUN Sale) is probably the third finest known.
Only 4,078 pieces were struck of this rarity with an estimated 75-85 coins believed extant today in all grades. AU and Uncirculated examples are very scarce, as one would imagine. One reason this issue is so seldom seen in the better grades of Uncirculated is that most examples have heavily abraded surfaces. As one can tell from the grade of this coin that is not the case here. Close examination, however, does reveal slight planchet flaking on the obverse and a short, diagonal planchet lamination over the eagle's neck. The fields are bright and semi-prooflike and the coin displays the usual strong luster characteristics known on most high grade 1852-D Quarter Eagles. Strongly struck throughout with only the slightest weakness evident on the eagle's breast and the juncture of the left (facing) side of the shield. Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (2/05).
